Markleeville is named for Jacob Markley, who staked a 160-acre claim here on a creek and erected a toll bridge on the road from Genoa, Nevada. Markley was killed in a gunfight in 1863. The town of Markleeville was established in 1861 where Markley made his claim.

The campground (Loop 1 = sites 1-34) is open first-come-first-serve as of June 2022! The hot springs pools remain closed. Because the capacity of our water system was impacted by debris flows, only one loop of the campground is open at this time (sites 1-34).
