The Starnberger See is the second largest lake in Bavaria (after the Chiemsee) and is situtated to the southwest of Munich. The lake offers spectacular views of the mountains to the south and the proximity to the city has made it a very popular (and very expensive) place to live as well as a popular destination for day trips.

Where is Lake Starnberg in Germany?
Lake Starnberg is a huge 21km lake just south of Munich. Came here early in the morning by train from Munich and spent the last hour on a small charter boat cruising this beautiful lake.
What to do around Lake Starnberger?
You can take the S-Bahn to the Starnberger See where you can go out on ferry boats and see the distant mountains as you cruise the lake. There is also a museum founded by the author of “Das Boot” with an interesting collection of “der blaue Reiter” paintings. This is a well-kept secret and took me a few trips to Munich to find.

How to get from Starnberger See to Possenhofen?
You can get off at four different stations alongside the west shore of Starnberger See, we chose Starnberg. Our plan was to walk from Starnberg to the next station called Feldafing. This is a lovely walk about 5-6 km along the shore of Starnberger Lake. In Possenhofen (about half way) is a castle with a wonderful park.
